Teacher of the Month March 2013- Richenda Nagle

MARYSVILLE, CA - She calls herself a late bloomer having raised her family before taking on the tall order of teaching, but make no mistake, Richenda "Ricky" Nagle is right where she belongs.

"I decided it was a perfect time for me," the Covillaud Elementary School teacher said. "I was able to be a mom and am now able to be a mom to these children."

Nagle prides herself on pushing her first graders to embrace the adventures of learning.

"I have very high expectations," Nagle admitted. "I feel children rise to the occasion. If you raise that bar, they are going to rise right with you."

Nagle grew up in England before coming to the U.S. with her husband. She said a strong support system and a boost of confidence gave her the strength to pursue teaching.

For the last 12 years, the fundamentals of reading, vocabulary and math have been her focus, but most of all, creating a strong foundation for the future.

News10's 'Reading Connects'

News10 has launched a major initiative called 'Reading Connects.' Its purpose is to help build a stronger community, one reader at a time.

Fact: 37% of third graders in Sacramento read at grade level. 74% of those students will never catch up.

News10 is teaming up with parents, businesses, schools, libraries and volunteers to improve the literacy rate in our area. We are combining the power of television, the web, and social media with the power of good people who want to make a difference.

Reading is one of the keys to a successful and productive life.

A minor investment of your time can change the path of a child's life.

We are here to help with information, resources and opportunities- for you to help build a better community.

Last month News10 My Neighborhood gave a shout out to our communities and ask you to send us a picture of a child reading to a pet. The pictures were then put into our photo gallery article and the names were submitted into our random drawing, where the winner was to receive a prize.

This contest was part of News10's Reading Connects campaign, which is our effort at improving the literacy rate in our area.

Research has shown that children's reading skills improve when they read to their pets, hence the inspiration for this contest.

The winner of our "Kids Reading to Pets" sweepstakes contest random drawing was Jill, who submitted a picture of her son, Devin, reading to his dog, Jake.
