In the face of squalls, the Vista del Lago High girls swim team continues to push forward, carving out a legacy in the water at one of the area’s newest schools.

The Eagles are not funded by the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District, have a pool they can’t compete in for half the season and field no other aquatics program on campus which diminishes their numbers. But, bolstered by a fourth-place finish at last month’s Sac-Joaquin Section Swimming Championships, Vista del Lago’s girls have earned the reputation in the swimming community as a program on the rise.

“It’s really neat to (watch) – they’re setting the tone,” said Eagles coach Joel Garceau, who also heads the swim teams at Folsom High. “They’re setting the traditions.”

The three schools that finished ahead of Vista del Lago – St. Francis, Davis and Rio Americano, respectively – boast a combined 26 section swim titles, so, truly, there is no shame in fourth place.

United Auburn Indian Community donates $1,000 to support Divine Spark and Fight Homelessness

Nevada City tribal members from the United Auburn Indian Community (UAIC) along with members of other local Maidu tribes, service organizations and friends of William Kelly gathered today near the bridge where Kelly's body was found to remember his life.  Kelly was a descendent of the former Maidu Chief, who found himself homeless.

Kelly passed away about three weeks ago after his body was recovered outside during the tail end of a freezing snow storm along Miners Trail under the Broad Street Bridge. Friends of Kelly are seeking to rename the trail and place a memorial plaque in his honor.

Chairman David Keyser of the UAIC presented a check in the amount of $1,000 at the event to Divine Spark director Dr. Thomas Streicher to assist in his fight against homelessness in Nevada County.

Cheri Elliott, one of America’s most legendary cyclist and locally well known as “The Broker on a Bike,” announced the launch of her free real estate mobile app.

The app uses GPS, when available, to locate the user and instantly display real estate listings in the immediate area. No more having to pull flyers.  You can see and save all the listings details and photos on the spot. Users can also search by address, city or zip code to see property details for all homes for sale in a specified area, including price, square footage, estimated mortgage, taxes, features, maps, pictures and more. The “Refine Search” feature lets users select a price range, property type and the number of beds and baths to help them find just what they’re looking for.
