Police investigate body found in Auburn regional park


The Placer County Sheriff's Department is investigating a homicide after the body of a man was found in an Auburn park.

At around 6 a.m. a parks service employee found the body of a man burned in the parking lot of Hidden Falls Regional Park.

The department is treating the incident as a homicide. No other information has been released at this time.

Small wildfire prompts evacuations near Colfax


Cal Fire crews are responding to a small wildfire burning near Colfax.

Firefighters first responded to the Tokayana Fire shortly after 1:00 p.m. Friday. Mark Zayas with Cal Fire estimates the fire is about seven acres.

Zayas says some nearby structures are threatened. Homes on Jans Lane have been evacuated, and crews have closed the road.

Common Cider experiences uncommon growth as appetite for cider increases


California's craft beer boom has sparked an interest in locally brewed beverages. Now, cider-makes like Auburn's Common Cider are looking to capitalize on the trend.

magazine cites Nielsen research putting cider's growth at more than 75 percent from 2013 to 2014. Common Cider's own growth speaks to the wider trend.

"Between our first and second year, it was probably 300 percent growth; between second and third, we're about 200 [percent]," Common Cider CEO and founder Fran Toves said. "We anticipate growing another 600 percent from this year to next year. The growth is staggering."

Placer Co. Sheriff: Woman in custody after driving car at deputy


A Roseville woman is in the hospital after allegedly leading Placer County sheriff's deputies on a car chase and then trying to hit a deputy with her car Wednesday afternoon.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office said around 2 p.m. deputies tried to pull over 61-year-old Dawn Olson in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 because she was driving 15 mph. Officials said Olson did not pull over and continued to drive eastbound on I-80 up to Bell Road, with her speed varying between 15 and 70 mph.

At Bell Road, deputies put out stop sticks, which then deflated the two passenger-side tires on Olson's car. Officials said Olson kept going and drove her car straight toward a sheriff's SUV and a deputy.

Two big rig collision leaves one engulfed in flames


A big rig caught on fire on eastbound Interstate 80 in Placer County on Wednesday morning, according to California Highway Patrol. 

CHP said the inflamed big rig caught on fire after running into the back of another big rig. Officers have not yet determined a cause for the collision.

Police investigate ‘suspicious death’ of Grass Valley man


Grass Valley police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found at his home Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 33-year-old man was found around 1:20 p.m. in the backyard of the home in the 100 block of Berryman Street. No other information about the man was released. Police said his identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified.

Because of the location and condition of the body, police said the case is being investigated as a suspicious death. A cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
