As 2011 comes to a close, I sit here reflecting on what an incredible year it’s been for this little ‘ol blog of mine.

I’m incredibly grateful for opportunities I’ve been presented with as a direct result of writing about motherhood, parenting, and children’s health…right here on Confessions of a Dr.Mom.

Getting the most out of your gift cards

SACRAMENTO - A survey from the National Retail Federation finds that $41 billion in gift cards have not been redeemed since 2005.

It's estimated that $100 billion in gift cards were purchased this year, but consumer advocates say about 2 to 5 percent of them are never redeemed.

The survey also showed an estimated one third of gift card purchases exceed the value of the card, which is great for vendors.  But that means two-thirds of transactions leave some spare cash on the card. When that happens, some consumers tuck them away and forget about them.

To get the most out of your gift card and not let them go to waste, here are a few tips you may not know: 

-- Under California state law, any gift card with a balance under $10 can be redeemed for cash from the merchant. 

Santa trades in sleigh for fishing boat for Make A Wish Foundation

Santa and some of his elves took time out from their Christmas preparations to spend time with some special kids.

It was all part of a special fishing trip in Florida put together by the folks at Make A Wish.

Each year the group tries to find a unique activity for children just before Christmas.

This year, Santa traded in his sleigh for a fishing boat.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month Committee Meets January 3rd

Sacramento/Placer,CA.-The National Child Abuse Prevention Month committee will host their monthly meeting Tuesday evening Januray 3rd from 6:00-8:30 P.M. at 5690 Mesa Verde Circle Rocklin,CA. The gathering will include pot luck dinner, program proceedings and opportunity to create Valentine gift bags for area foster/adopted children with special needs. Anyone planning on attending may affirm participation by phone (916-259-4396) and is asked to bring a dinner dish along with Valentine supplies (wrapped candy, stickers, crayons, pencils,small toys.cellophane bags etc…).

April is recognized from coast to coast as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time devoted to this critically important cause.
