Some menu items marketed as “healthy” by national fast-food chains are packed with more fat, sodium, or sugar than anyone should eat in an entire day, a new study says. On a list of the five worst “healthy” fast-food items released by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine are Wendy’s Baja Salad with more sodium than most people should consume in an entire day and McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal with more calories than a hamburger and more sugar than many candy bars. 

“Your health and your waistline will thank you for saying no to these so-called healthy foods,” says PCRM nutrition education director Susan Levin, M.S., R.D.

Memorial Day weekend marks the start of grilling season and the California Department of Public Health wants everyone to have a delicious and safe BBQ experience. This video features Food Safety Chief Pat Kennelly providing grilling safety tips to keep you and your family healthy all season long! Ensuring that the food you serve is safe is as simple as following these practical approaches:

  • Wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling food.
  • Make sure your utensils and food contact surfaces are clean.  Never put fresh vegetables or ready to eat foods on cutting boards or platters used for raw meat or poultry unless the surfaces have been thoroughly washed with soap and water.
  • Thaw your frozen meat and poultry in a refrigerator, not on the kitchen counter.  Make sure that juices from thawing meats cannot drip onto other food in the refrigerator.

Mother's Day treat: Homemade scones

I have never been a big fan of scones.  They have always been a bit dry for my taste.  That all changed thanks to Barbara Bowers of Rose Mountain Manor in Colfax, CA.  Barbara and her wonderful recipe were featued on News10 Midday and News10.net back in October of 2002.  From that point on, this recipe has been a staple for special events and just because. 


  • 3 1/3 cups Bisquick
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 6 tabelspoons softened butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup fruit*


Blend Bisquick and sugar. Cut in butter to form a crumbly mixture.  Beat eggs and milk together and add to dry mix.  Stir with a fork until just mixed (do not overmix).  Drop into four piles onto a baking sheet.  Cut into four pieces each with about one-eight inch between.  Sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 400 degrees for
