Local Bands Make it Personal During AMGEN Event
Local Bands Make it Personal During AMGEN Event

2011 AMGEN bicycle race will pass through Auburn Tuesday, May 17. As 20,000 people are expected to attend, local musicians have decided to offer free music to the crowds AND serve a good cause at the same time.

Two of Auburn's own bands...the musical time-machine; AWESOME 80s BOOMBOX and the Blues-infused FOX TROT MARY performing at the Big O / Elite Auto parking lot in Downtown Auburn at 11 am. These two bands are local favorites and feature graduates from the Placer High School music programs who have gone on the become Teachers, CPA's, Attorneys, and CEO's of local businesses. The bands will be performing to raise awareness about the situation facing Placer High School's ever-decreasing music program budget.

Christopher Crites; (who performs in-character as "Blakky Faux" in the 80's themed band) says, "We are NOT the two bands Auburn hired to perform for the AMGEN tour. This is much more personal to us. We live here; these are OUR kids being affected by these budget cuts. I read the Auburn Journal article about just how hard PHS's music programs are struggling, and I knew I needed to do something. With the AMGEN event coming thru town, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to raise awareness on a local level, while performing for our friends & neighbors. It's a win for everyone! We are members of this community who are donating our time, because music education is something that can do so much to help kids stay on target in life. Music gave me an early focus and I've gone on to make a career of it doing films scores. Our drummer in AWESOME 80s BOOMBOX, Mark Leftridge, is the Drumline teacher at PHS. Nikki Brisson, bassist for FOX TROT MARY; is a student at PHS. It doesn't get much more homegrown than this.

We've teamed up with the wonderful Music Boosters organization, and will be taking donations at the show. BUT, that is just the beginning. Our next phase will be organizing a massive, multi-band fund raising event next year. Please come out to support a good cause. And, we'll rock your socks off in the process! "

AWESOME 80s BOOMBOX and FOX TROT MARY will be performing live at 11 am, Tuesday, May 17 at 984 Lincoln Way (Big O/Elite Auto Spa parking lot in downtown) across from the Auburn Performing Arts Center.
