Auto Museum connects Black History and the Automobile in June

Auto Museum connects Black History and the Automobile in June

During the month of June 2018, the California Automobile Museum plans to highlight the important connection between the automobile and black history, migration, and upward mobility along with how The Negro Motorist Green Book was instrumental in helping black Americans travel safely during a time of segregation in the south (1930s through the mid-1960s). Authored by New York City mailman Victor Hugo Green, the all-important Green Book was once a helpful guide to services, areas and places (e.g. restaurants, lodging, gas stations, etc.) friendly to African Americans during a time of racial discrimination.

Railroad Museum to present suspenseful new exhibit “Death Valley Scotty’s Race for Glory”

The California State Railroad Museum & Foundation are proud to present a special, limited-time exhibit titled “Death Valley Scotty’s Race for Glory” on Friday, May 18, 2018. The exhibit relates the suspenseful and thrilling story of Death Valley Scotty’s record-breaking, high speed trip from Los Angeles to Chicago in 1905. As a dramatic centerpiece to this interpretive and inspiring exhibit, a massive steam locomotive used during the feat – Santa Fe’s No. 1010 – will be on public display. The historic locomotive No. 1010, part of the Museum’s impressive collection, was last displayed in the Museum in the 1990s. Since that time, No. 1010 has been stored and maintained in the nearby Railyard Shops.
