Cool week ahead; Rain, snow forecast Tuesday-Wednesday

SACRAMENTO, CA - The last week of 2010 will be an unsettled and chilly one, with the exception of the brief dry break from rain Monday.

Monday will be a mostly dry day throughout the area. Highs will warm to the mid to upper 50s.

Hazy sunshine may peak through by midday with increasing clouds late ahead of another round of wet weather starting Tuesday. The heaviest amount of precipitation looks to be Tuesday night into Wednesday. Ski resorts could get another one to two feet of snow!

Snow levels will start high with this passing system around 6,000feet in the Sierra, but then drop down to 3,000 feet Wednesday morning, delivering snow down to foothill levels.

UNDATED (AP) -- It's a rare event -- a total eclipse of the moon.

And even rarer is an eclipse that take place during the winter solstice. It meant that the moon was glowing high in the sky during the eclipse overnight.

The 3 1/2 hour spectacle was visible from North and Central America where skies were clear.

The totality phase -- when the moon was completely immersed in Earth's shadow -- lasted 72 minutes.

Impersonating someone online will soon be a crime

SACRAMENTO - With the start of the new year, maliciously impersonating someone online - with a phony Facebook page or e-mails apparently sent from their account - isn't just a cruel prank anymore. It's a crime.

Senate Bill 1411, authored by State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), becomes law January 1, updating California's 19th century impersonation law to the Internet age.

"A 19th century law is no deterrent for 21st century impersonators," Simitian said.

Online impersonators who assume someone else's identity to harm, intimidate, threaten or defraud may be charged with a misdemeanor.

"E-personation," said Simitian, "is the dark side of the social networking revolution. Facebook or MySpace pages, e-mails, texting and comments on Web forums have been used to humiliate or torment people and even put them in danger. Victims have needed a law they can turn to."

Bank robber with sunglasses strikes twice, say Sacramento police

SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento police hope a bank robber's disguise of wearing sunglasses won't stop someone from recognizing him.

Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Norm Leong says robbery detectives think the same man has struck area banks twice since Dec. 10 and also believe they have a bank surveilliance camera image of him as he waited in line at a third bank. The man left as he reached the front of the line without going up to a teller in that case.

Leong said the robber's first hit was at a bank near Folsom Boulevard and 64th Street on Dec. 10 at 10:47 a.m.. The man went into the bank, demanded and received money from a teller, and then left on foot.

It was Dec. 21 at 9:55 a.m. when the man entered a bank near West El Camino Avenue and Truxel Road, waited in line and then left.

Tres Agaves Roseville celebrates its Jan. 21 tequila distillary event

Each month, Tres Agaves Roseville welcomes ambassadors from a Tequila distillery to celebrate that Tequila’s unique flavor profile and culture.  On Friday, Jan. 21 from 6:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. Tres Agaves Roseville will feature Jose Cuervo Tequilas and provide guests with the opportunity to learn first-hand how to craft Tres Agaves’ signature all-natural margaritas in a margarita making class. To add a new twist, specialty flavored agave nectars and rim salts will also be available for experimentation.

Classes last about 30-45 minutes and include education on the history and culture of making Tequila as well as a hands-on demonstration where each guest will make two of their own margaritas to enjoy. Classes will begin on the hour each hour starting at 5:30, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.

Tres Agaves Passport members are $10 and non-members are $25. Class will include two cocktails plus a sampling of Jose Cuervo’s Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo.

New veterinarian brings shelter medicine expertise to Placer SPCA

Placer SPCA proudly announces that Dr. Barbara Jones, DVM, MS, has joined the organization as an onsite veterinarian.

After receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Atlantic Veterinary College in 2004, Dr. Jones received her Certificate of Residency Training in Shelter Medicine from the innovative Koret Shelter Medicine Program at UC Davis in 2008.  She was the third person to graduate from the elite specialty program.  UC Davis’ Shelter Medicine Program was the first of its kind in the nation, with an emphasis on the veterinary issues specific to animal shelters, including high-volume spay and neuter, disease prevention, nutrition, and stress reduction.

Junior League of Sacramento 6th annual crab feed

The Junior League of Sacramento is hosting the 6th Annual Crab Feed fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 5.  The event will have a denim and diamond theme.  Tickets are now available online at www.jlsac.org.  Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.  Early ticket purchases are strongly encouraged.  Reserved tables are also available.

Dinner will include Dungeness crab, pasta, salad, antipasto, bread, and dessert.  A no-host bar opens at 5:00p.m.

Dutch Oven demonstrations and cook-off!

Central California Dutch Oven Adventures (CCDOA) is hosting the International Sportsman Exposition (ISE) Dutch Oven cook-offs and demonstrations at Cal Expo fairgrounds Jan. 20 through 23. 

The 3-pot cook-off is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, and will consist of a bread, main dish and a desert recipe.
Set-up 9:00am
Cooking starts at 11:00am
Presentation/judging: Breads at 2:00p.m., Main dish at 3:00p.m. and Desert at 4:00p.m.
Judging results at 5:00p.m.

It's free to become a cook-off contestant. Beginners and amateurs are encouraged to enter, and there is still time to enter!  Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.
