Sutter Roseville and Auburn Faith RNs Approve New Contract

Sutter Roseville and Auburn Faith RNs Approve New Contract

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United have announced that registered nurses at Sutter Health hospitals in Roseville and Auburn have overwhelmingly voted to ratify new three year agreements that provide for important gains in patient protections, and compensation, while protecting the nurses’ health coverage and retirement security.

The new collective bargaining agreement affects some 850 RNs at Sutter Roseville Medical Center and 250 at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital.

A central component for nurses at both hospitals was assuring no reductions in healthcare benefits or pensions at a time when many employers are attempting to force through cuts in coverage and retirement security.

Additionally, the RNs won improvements in patient care measures and compensation that the RNs say will enhance patient safety and strengthen retention of experienced RNs and recruitment of new nurses at the hospitals.

Yuba City woman gets state's first hand transplant

YUBA CITY, CA - It's been five years since Emily Fennell has been able to cut her fingernails or cut into a juicy steak.

Life changed drastically for the 26-year-old Yuba City resident after she lost her right hand in a car accident.

With the help of a donor and surgeons at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, she was the first person in the state to receive a hand transplant.

Fennell lived in Southern California at the time of the accident. She was the passenger in a car that turned over. Her hand fell through the sunroof and was trapped between the car and the ground, which left it unrecognizable.

Fennell's father, Danny Fennell said his daughter has had a "can-do" attitude since the accident.

"She did fine without her right hand and she's right-handed," Danny Fennell said. "She compensated and learned to do everything with her left hand."

Emily Fennell started researching hand transplants last summer.

Foothill Water Agencies Hustle to Keep

Supplies Flowing After Canal Break

The Placer County Water Agency is striving to keep customers supplied with water after a major break on the Pacific Gas and Electric Company Bear River Canal cut water flows to the Agency and its customers.

PG&E spokesman Paul Moreno said the incident was reported about 5 a.m. Tuesday (Apr. 19) at a remote location near Colfax, below Rollins Reservoir.  He said the canal was flowing at a rate of about 400 cubic feet per second when the break occurred and that flows into the canal were stopped directly following the report.

Moreno said the company is still assessing damages but it appears a section of the large canal ruptured after a supporting earthen berm collapsed.  Water from the canal ran about 100 feet down the steep canyon wall into the Bear River.

“The canal system was inspected by foot patrol on Apr.

Should all police dogs wear bullet-proof vests?

Should all police dogs wear bullet-proof vests?

Thor, a police dog at the Antioch K-9 unit, received a bullet-proof vest on Tuesday along with the 3 other dogs.  K-9 Thor was shot by a suspect last summer and survived. You can see his bullet wound in the photo.

There are a new vest design that is custom-fit for each dog and allows them to move with greater freedom and mobility than the old-style bullet-proof vests.

Do you think the new vests will help our furry 4-legged officers? Should Sacramento area dogs be protected in the same way?
