Fatal jump from Foresthill Bridge raises concern

AUBURN, CA - Dozens of people have jumped to their death from the Foresthill Bridge near Auburn.

The latest incident happened Wednesday morning, in the midst of a multi-million dollar seismic retrofitting project.

Placer County Sheriff's Department said the 26-year-old man from Oregon jumped around 11 a.m. A construction worker witnessed it.

This was the second suicide from the bridge this year.

"This bridge is an epidemic pull for people to come here and end their life," Auburn resident Mamie-Rae Carpenter said. "I think every two months someone has jumped off the bridge or someone has tried to stop them."

Carpenter believes, to date, 64 people have committed suicide by jumping off the Foresthill Bridge.

All across the Foresthill Bridge are call boxes. Inside is the crisis hotline number.

Mother's Day treat: Homemade scones

Ingredients

  • 3 1/3 cups Bisquick
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 6 tabelspoons softened butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup fruit*

Directions

Blend Bisquick and sugar. Cut in butter to form a crumbly mixture.  Beat eggs and milk together and add to dry mix.  Stir with a fork until just mixed (do not overmix).  Drop into four piles onto a baking sheet.  Cut into four pieces each with about one-eight inch between.  Sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 400 degrees for
